The shading on the edges in the back looks kind of strange though - like haze or something.

No, it's just some pre-done hair for Alyson (originally for Jessi, in fact) that I put on Antonia's head. And it looks awesome, as Poser hair goes, which is why I'd like to learn to make my own.

The edges look strange because I forget to render with the correct background color when transparency is involved. Or put differently, because Poser does something not quite correct with the alpha channel.
