hborre and bagginsbill, thanks for the replies. I had tried out the different unit settings on my computer, and as I changed the settings I could see that the displacement values changed. I re-entered my setting of 0.01  for each unit setting and rendered but did not see any significant difference. What I failed to do was set the the preferred state and re-start Poser before entering my displacement values. When I did that, I got the distortion my friend was getting. Well, it just shows that I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer :-).
