I don't know what you did, so cannot say what should be done differently. ;-)
In my render, I was working with a hair prop called "Actual Hair". So I put a rule in "Apply Rules" for actual*.
This hair had materials on it called Top, Top2, Middle, Bottom, and Cap. In Shader Rules, I added Rule Top*, Rule Middle, Rule Bottom, etc. Each was linked to Copy Template Hair. And, of course, I created a material on the control prop called Template Hair.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
