Subject: any quad core i7 iMac users using IDL yet?

Vex ( ) posted Wed, 18 November 2009 at 4:04 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 2:34 PM

Just wondering what your render times are with an IDL quality higher than 2. lol.

I'm on a 2.4ghz core 2 duo with 4gb ram and im sprouting cobwebs waiting :/

What are you using for the Irradiance Cache value? It can be much lower for IDL than AO.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

 100 lol.

i thought it had to be 100 for idl to make shadows?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Wed, 18 November 2009 at 5:01 PM

No, what that means is you told Poser it is not allowed to speed up IDL by using cached values. You're forcing it to calculate IDL luminance and shadows for every single point in the scene, including points you can't see that are needed to figure out the total bounced lighting.

Try 5. If it looks wrong, try 10, and so on. It will be way faster.

Check this out. Rendered with

IC=100
ILQ=7

Time: 424 seconds

 i've tried 2, 25, 42, 70.. it all leaves awkward gaps in the "ao" type shadows around her clothes.

its rendering right now ( precalculation went WAY faster with lower IC )

IDL turned off.

Time: 14 seconds

So IDL is only costing 9 seconds.

You may be experiencing the IDL 90-degree artifacts, which cannot be dismissed via higher render settings. This is a bug that SM is working on.

I'd have to see what you're getting to be sure.

See the strange lighting where the cube meets the floor in the shadows area? That's a bug.

Here I used much higher settings (40, 40), but still the artifacts are there.

 so if i tackle it with the morph tool and change it from a 90º angle it will behave?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Wed, 18 November 2009 at 5:43 PM

Maybe. Or moving the cloth away a tiny bit might fix it.
