Do you like my bubbles in this image I posted a few days ago? This is done by attaching a "rainbow" like color map to the highlights channel. The color map is driven by an "angle of incidence" node. The sphere is made 85% transparent, 15% reflective.
Shawn
Yes that's just what I had in mind. Can you post a link to the mat or should I IM you with my email?
Rutra
What was the base material you started with?
I saw your image as soon as you posted it because you are on my favorite artist list. It's that image that got me thinking about doing the image I'm working on.
Thanks

Plain white. The material is really simple. Color is plain white, transparency is 85%, reflectivity is 15% and the highlights have what I described. Everything else is just the default.
Maybe I should have also increased the slider of color transmitted light so that the shadows are colorful too but I couldn't find any reference photo where I could see shadows of bubbles and so I wasn't sure if the shadows are colorful or not.
I'm glad that my image inspired you. :-)

I don't know how to attach a Rainbow like color map to the highlights channel. I'm not sure if that can be done in the basic material editor or if I would need the FE. But if I could figure out how to do that in the basic material editor, I could then probably handle adding an angle of incidence node in the FE.

Yes, it must be in the FE. See the image, I hope it becomes clear. You can use other color maps, of course, this is just one of the Vue default ones (it's in Terrain editor maps, it's called "engineer").

Like Artur I used transparency/reflection of 85/15, but my highlights are only approx 50%.

Thanks much for the help. I'll play around in the FE later today, gone until later.
I'm hoping that Shawn can chime in here to .
I wanted to see if he can post his mat file just to see the different approach to doing this in the FE.
I notice Rutra is an angle of incidence node connected to Highlight.
And Artpearl is another node attached to the color map.
Looks like there's lots of ways to do this. Cool.
I like to dig into a file and tweak parameters and swap thing around to see whats going on.
Thanks for the screen shots

Oh something else - I have enabled the colored shadows as well, I'm pretty sure bubbles do that.
I enabled dispersion in the transparency tab(see my previous post), and set 'color transmitted light' to 12% in the effects tab, and 'compute physically accurate caustics' in the render settings.
Another aspect of bubbles is that they lose their colors the thinner they get, just before they burst. Because of gravity the top of the bubble gets thinner first, so it would be nice to try and emulate that- colors at the bottom but no colors disappearing from the top. I've started doing it but run out of patience - perhaps tomorrow.
And we havnt even touched on the subject of distorted bubbles, particularly when attached to the blowing gadget or just detached, and for very big bubbles.
Fun!

The material now has 3 layers: 1. transparent(bottom layer) 2. colored(middle layer ), altitude range -1 to 0.25(environment tab) 3. Black and white(top layer), altitude range 0.25 to 1.(Probably could be done with mixed materials too)
For comparison see the link above (and the other photos there too- amazing!)

Highlight Color was white.
Highlight global intensity was 100%
And Highlight global size was 100% Shiny
Global Transparency was 79%.
Global reflectivity was 16%.

Thank to all for the help. I have placed this image in my gallery with a link her to bigger image.I had some time to learn a little about Vue.
Sometimes I get an image idea and I just can't get it out into world as I would like.
I just can't seem to reproduce what I had in mind.
But with Vue and much help from good people willing to help me though the process I was able to get as close a possible to what I had in mind. It's just a simple image but it took me 20 hours to work on to get it the way I want.
A few weeks back I learned how to do iridescent clouds then over the last week iridescent soap bubbles.
Again thanks for the help. I would still be working on it if not for the help.

Soft and harmonious- quite pleasant image. Very different from the other images in your gallery which have strong colors and contrasts and dramatic compositional motion.
So what did you end up using for the bubbles' material?
Thanks for posting the result - always nice to see where the suggestions led.

I used your material with the following mods.
I changed color map to the lighter version of the rainbow.
On the advanced turb node I changed amplitude and largest feature.
With noise node I used Water(calm setting)and messed with the scale.
I need to look at some more Geekatplay tuts to learn more of the FE.
Geekatplay.com will soon be posting a soap bubble tut also. I had ask them about a soap bubble mat that they are selling in one of their packs and they said they would post a tut soon on how they made that. Pretty cool of them to.
Again thanks for help to all.

Hi
I need help finding a free soap bubble material for Vue 8 Complete.
I modeled a bubble wand and made a sky I like. I'm doing a scene with just a sky and a view of a close up bubblewand as if I'm blowing bubbles through it.
I tried messing with various glasses but nothing looks right yet for the bubble material.
Anyone got a link to a free soap bubble material for Vue?
Possibly with a bit of iridescence in it.?
Thanks
Frank
