I don't really know about drivers, Open GL, Direct X and so on, but initially I had loads of problems with DAZ Studio crashing. Lots of advice from the DAZ Help Desk etc. (very patient people), checked versions of Open GL and Direct X (can't remember how) and they were OK. Also could not find a new graphics driver.
But sometimes Studio worked, sometimes it crashed. By checking over when things worked and when they did not I found that as long as I set 'preferences' as soon as I went into Studio (as described in my earlier message) and before doing anything else it worked fine. This is on versions 1.8 and 3 point whatever.
There have actually been times when I've forgotten to set the preferences and it has not crashed, but they are pretty rare.
I don't know why this gets over the problem on my machine - I suspect some memory / interrupt conflicts maybe to blame.
I thought perhaps this was the same problem as mentioned here, and that setting preferences straight away may solve these problems - a bit like throwing salt over the left shoulder, I admit, but it works for me. If the thing doesn't let you get that far then this doesn't help at all, unfortunately.
