Subject: Play by post Shadowrun Game trial run

drewradley ( ) posted Thu, 17 December 2009 at 1:40 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 4:54 AM

Posted this over at Daz, but figure it could be open to anyone as long as they have the correct models.

Had the idea of trying a play-by-pose game for a while now and am looking for a 4-5 brave souls to be my guinea pigs!

I've made a set in Hex and imported a few .obj that are okay to share. Characters are Victoria 3 RR and Mike 3 RR, along with a few Platinum club items (you must own or purchase these items to play! We will not be breaking any rules, terms of agreement or anything for this game!) and tons of freebies. I will provide links for everything and upload the set and poser file to an on-line "drive" I rent. These files will not contain anything that cannot be legally shared.

As the title says, it will be Shadowrun. So I'd like people who know shadowrun. This is experimental enough without needing to teach someone the rules of shadowrun. As it is, I'll need to refer to my rather dusty source books a lot. Dice rolls will be on-line using one that automatically sends out an email with the results.

I will have the player create their own character, both on paper and in Poser. Your "avatar" should be as close to your paper character as possible. You are welcome to use any free or $1.99 items/figures. Ask me about others, I might have them. We can discuss more if anyone's interested. But everyone will need to own all the same models, so try to use as many freebies as possible.

Players will get a freebie list they need to have, plus a list of Daz Platinum club items they will need to own and then download a scene I made in Hex so there is no problem sharing it -- complete with NPCs and any action they may be doing. The scene will be a number of frames. The player will place their character somewhere in the scene and apply whatever action they are performing and then delete everything but their character (and all they are wearing/carrying) and upload it. Just the poser scene, not obj files, textures or anything that you don't have the rights to share. I will then place that scene in the set and make an animation from different camera angles so everyone can see what is happening from their point of view (a first person view from your character). Then I will place the completed scene back up (now with the PCs) starting off exactly where the previous one ended (last frame becomes the first) complete with NPC's doing what they are doing. And repeat.

For combat, we'll pose in reverse order so the highest initiatives get to see what the lowest are doing before they act. The lowest initiative will pose their character first (or NPC) and make an animation of what they are doing from a couple of different camera angles (it doesn't need to be fully rendered, an anti-aliased preview will be enough). The next character makes their pose, and so forth. Meanwhile I will be collecting all the poses and putting them all together in the scene, making some fine tune adjustments and making an animation of it.

I'm not looking for Pixar quality animations, just enough so we can tell what the character is doing. Though, I will be giving bonus points for really good pose animations.

I've uploaded the first scene here:

http://www.box.net/shared/static/bvdrzq6oc8.zip

It is a bit more than 80 megs so it might take a little while to download.
Look at the items.txt first to see what you'll need to open. I've also included an empty scene (a furnished StufferShack) that shouldn't need any additional downloads to open. You are welcome to use this scene in any renders you want.

Again, there is nothing in these files that are not okay to share. If you do not have all the files listed you will not be able to open the full scene (just the empty set)! Well, you will, but it will ask for all the missing files.

Can't we play Call of Cthulhu instead? I found Shadowrun a little goofy.

I don't know Call of Cthulhu well enough to run it - nor do I have any books. But I am open to other games, just would need to be one I own.

No worries. I'll try to explain it better. I'm making the assumption that you know what a role playing game is....
Basically, I want to try to run a Shadowrun game but instead of sitting around a table with pewter (or plastic) static miniatures, we will use a Poser scene where everyone has the same models, textures, etc. I as the GM will set up the scene and control the NPCs (i.e. make animated poses for what they are doing). The players will get that file and they can open it in Poser and will be able to explore the scene, move the slider back and forth to see what the NPCs are doing, etc.

They will then make a Poser figure to place into the scene and give it a pose that represents what they are doing, making sure to tell everyone what they used so we can be sure to get it. They will also make a Shadowrun character sheet with skills and everything. Dice rolling will be done on-line with one of the many free dice rollers that send the results out by email so I can see what the player rolled. I will then change the scene, make a Quicktime VR animation from the characters' points of view so they can see what is around them and a few regular animations so they can see the actual action.

If a player wants to say soemthing, they will record what they say, add lipsync to their pose and then include the audio file  and an animation (could be jsut the face) of them speaking. I will do the same for the NPCs.

Everyone will have to own the same models, etc. Or use one that can be shared without breaking any rules.

Each round of game play will be a new poser file picking up right where the last one left off.

Hope that helps and doen't just make it more confusing. I've played Warhammer 40k this way a few years ago and it was a lot of fun.

Sounds like fun, sadly I haven't a clue about shadowrun.

If this works well, I'll be expanding to to other games. :)

Attached Link: Shadowrun Play by animation game

I've set up a web page for this: Please check it out if you are still interested in playing. It won't quite be play by pose quite yet, but I think it'll be pretty cool.
