Subject: Realistic Asian Female Characters for V4

I would like to see more REALISTIC Asian female characters for V4 in the Market Place.

Please note that not all Asian women have the stereotypical slanted eyes with no eyelids and wide cheekbones.  A substantial number of Chinese and Southeast Asian women actually have non-slanted, big almond shaped eyes with visible eyelids.  Their faces are rounder, and their cheekbones are not necessarily wide.  Examples are the gorgeous model Charo from the Phillippines and actress Maggie Q of Mission Impossible, who possesses the best of Swedish and Vietnamese features.

I understand that morphing Caucasian V4 into an Asian character is a dauntingly difficult task, especially when one tries to create more realistic Asian eyelids.  I have tried and failed many times, which is why I would like to see more realistic Asian characters in RMP who do look like they come from Asia instead of just Caucasian characters with Eye Slant and Eye Fold Smooth dialed to 1.

Just for reference, would something like this work for you? It's not V4, and I can't do MarketPlace work, but who knows, I might get bored one day and decide to make some freebies for the Vickster.

Odf, Thank you very much for taking an interest in my "wishing well" idea.  I really appreciate you taking the time to morph Antonia into a more Asian looking character.  She's awesome.  I particularly like her eyebrows and the shape of her nostrils.  If we define Asia to include India and Pakistan, then I think her features are more Indian and Pakistani than Southeast Asian.  I must confess that my interests are more in the Southeast Asian features, e.g., people who come from countries such as Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.  Compared with the Asian character in your image, I think the Southeast Asian cheekbones are not as high, their mid face depth more shallow, their faces less chiseled, and their eyelid folds more arched.  I have attached a few images of the gorgeous model Charo Conquillo from the Philippines.  These images are of poor quality but I hope they will help demonstrate what I mean.  Again thanks for your interest in this matter.

odf ( ) posted Thu, 26 November 2009 at 3:41 PM

Thanks for the references! She is indeed gorgeous (by the way, Google seems to think her name is Charo Ronquillo 😉).

I didn't really take much time with the picture above, just used some morphs that I already had.

Ive been working on localizing the Shade character Hanako into English (soon to appear on the Mirye.net website). I too have been frustrated with Asians in Poser. We just aren't built that way :-)

That is excellent news.  Looking forward to this and future ones, if you do them.

I use Miki2 for an asian character. I like her face more than the morphed V4.  I got her free though with Poser 7.

Oops.  I really did misspell her name, didn't I?  Thanks for the correction.  I sure hope you will consider creating Southeast Asian facial morphs into Antonia one day.  Antonia is a very unique and pretty character.  Thanks again for your interest.

I second Infinity10.  That IS excellent news.  Thanks for taking an interest in my request.  Will Hanako still be a Shade character or can we render her in Poser too?  Pardon me for my ignorance.  I do not have Shade so I really don't know if a character made for Shade can be used in Poser.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I too like Miki2's face a lot, despite the fact that Miki2 has very few built-in morphs.  I even purchased ultra morphs for Miki2 from RDNA but these morphs are nowhere near the huge amount of morphs available in the V4 Morphs++.  For example, just last month I bought Manihoni's beautiful Suzu for Miki2.  Her features are perfect, except that I prefer to see her lips a little fuller.  To my chagrin, there is neither a "Lip Top Center Height" nor a "Lip Bottom Edge Height" parameter for me to increase her lips's fullness.  These parameters are readily available in V4's Morphs++.  I believe V4's popularity very much results from the fact that her morphs provide incredible flexibility for character creation and experimentation.

Hmmm, if I weren't so busy with my Antonia textures, I'd give it a try. :)

Maybe I will squeeze some time in for this project and see if I can do some morphs to go with a texture set.

Thank you BluEcho.  I hope you'll give it a shot.  As an additional reference, above are a few images of actress Brenda Song.  Her facial features combine the best of Hmong and Thai features.

Faery_Light ( ) posted Tue, 29 December 2009 at 10:40 PM

I discovered that I already have an Asian texture set for V4 that just needs a few tweaks.

It is about the same skin tones as your reference images.
Now I need to work on a face morph.

odf, if you can do one that would be great. :)

Is this what you are looking for?
I still need to tweak the textures a bit, create mc6, DS and pz2 files.

While my character created with xilia78 is not completely Asian, she was made with some Asian features in mind. She is both Japanese and African American and will be available very soon in the marketplace. We took great care in making her more realistic in her features as we do believe that both of these minorities aren't represented to their fullest extent. More characters are sure to follow with more realism put into them. Here is a head shot of her and a full body picture can be seen on my homepage. With any luck, she will be in the marketplace in about a week or so if you are interested.

Thank you,
Pointblank

Sentinelle ( ) posted Sun, 10 January 2010 at 12:14 PM

Xilia looks very attractive.  Her features are softer, and I do see hints of Asian features.  I'm looking forward to seeing Xilia and equally attractive Asian characters in the Market Place in the near future.  Thanks for the "sneak preview" of Xilia.

No problem and thank you for the compliments :)

She's actually in que for testing and has been for a couple days now so barring any unforseen problems, she will be available within the next week.

Again, thank you for the interest and compliments. We(myself and xilia78) would like to take on more projects such as this in the future as it was both fun and challenging to pull off what direction we wanted to take her in. Neither side clearly won as will be reflected by two different shader options which are included with her and make her look dramatically different while still being the same character. Here is another picture, which is also on my homepage showing off both shader options for Poser and Daz Studio 3+ users:

Ok, This is still an EXTREMELY early WIP that I started today. I still need to tweak shaders and bring the colors more in line with what it should be. I never really try to go for a single ethnicity so you might see more in her than just one type of ethnicity. Is this closer to what you were looking for though?

Yes.  She definitely looks Asian.  You are a very talented artist.  Her features are soft and lovely, although I would like to see more of her upper eyelid folds.  On many Asian faces in the Far East, the upper eyelid folds remain visible even though they do gradually recede into the inner corner of the eye. As an example, here's a photo of gorgeous actress Ziyi Zhang.  Note that her upper eyelid folds stay visible above her eyes.

Ok, Well after months of trying I think I finally have come close. Her name is Katana and she is for V4.2 and Morphs++. Both are required for her to work properly but she will be in the marketplace soon.

She's very pretty although her eyes still look stereotyped.  She seems to have lost her upper eyelid folds.

Hawarren, will this do? She's not a perfect example of what you're requesting, but, like Yue, she has a very pronounced double eyelid. Unlike Yue, she doesn't have the rounded face. Her face is sharper, slightly stronger featured, and based on a beautiful Japanese woman I used to know. She has real, modeled epicanthic folds that actually touch just outside her lacrimal, though I left a minimal amount of room so she can open and close her eyes without poke through.  Believe me, my poor ex boyfriend did NOT like me grabbing his eyes and playing with them for twenty minutes, to make sure I got the basic shape right! ;)

... He bit me. Several times. Hard. I still have the bruises. ;.;

And, at the risk of being spammy, some recent promo mockups I'm working on, now that she's finished. She's been a work in progress since late 2007, as I've worked to make every detail as accurate as I could, and a labor of love, for sure. I honestly feel no product out there accurately captures the beauty of Asian people completely, not even Aki, here, but I think she's very close, in my apparently not so humble opinion.

Khrys, Might I suggest that you team up with a texture artist for your next project?  You'll be able to devote all your time to modeling your exquisite Asian character, and your business partner will be able to devote all his/her time to creating the most realistic, silky smooth Asian skin texture.  The combined product will be OMG, a masterpiece.  Just a thought.

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Sun, 25 April 2010 at 11:21 AM

I've considered it, Hawarren, but it's difficult to find a texture artist that's interested in sharing the responsibilities like that. Most of them want to make characters, and textures, too. :) Working on  a cute face-morph add on for A4/G4. :)

I'm snagging this picture.  I haven't done an Asian character since Asami for Miki 2 and that was next on my list to try.  The reference images you have here are invaluable.  When I did Kupua I used a former Miss Hawaii's features as a base to create the character because I did not want to offend anyone or create a "caricature" or stereotype.

3-DArena, thank you very much for taking an interest in my request.  It is difficult to find reference photos of realistic Asian faces since the movie and fashion industries tend to prefer the stereotyped Asian face that has very wide cheekbones and slanted small eyes with no upper eyelid folds.  I hope you will enjoy modeling V4 after Lin Chi-Ling.  Her beauty is truly exquisite.

Sentinelle ( ) posted Sat, 08 May 2010 at 5:02 PM
