The 3D viewing effect can yes make things look as if they are "coming at you", but Cameron didn't use that specific attribute as much at all as say "Aliens Vs. Monsters" did. Avatar's 3D was much more about showing depth of the scene and sometimes to a greater level, a DOF look.
