First shadows: Click on one of them planets that is circling that tiny sphere. Those little planets are all your lights, when you click on one the property for it will be displayed, enable shadow for it and it will cast a shadow behind the figure.
Next, raising the Titanic, move your cursor over the hip portion of the character and click on it, then use the Y axis and move your character up (The hip is a valuable part of the character, because you control the complete body along the x, y, and z axis. To increase or decrease the size of your character, click on the body (located in the hiearchy menu under the figure).
Additionally use the window drop down menu and click on hierachy to view and click on say the body to display many of your full body morphs for the character. What are full body morphs: they are combined morphs that control more than one part of the body of the character. There are also individual body and head morphs by click on individual parts. Use both in creating individual characters.
That should give you a kick start in dial flipping to create outstanding personally shaped characters.
Also get familiar with both the user and tutorial manuals (located under your help menu). They explain most of your basic questions.
Again the heirachy menu is a great buddy to have.
Just wait until you download a few of them texture maps and enter the world of the Materials Room where you will learn how to apply simple nodes and texturize your V3. Jan
