THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Purchased new toy(s)

Well, the holidays have calmed the heck down for me now and as I am taking command of my computer chair back I found myself buying some Post-Christmas presents for myself...

One small purchase was to pre-order the soon to come Groboto 3.0, one of the main cool things it wil  be able to do is to export "unified meshes", which for Bryce means they will be more optimized, so we can get even bigger meshes imported more easily. It's great news for ZBrush users as it will be easier to sculpt onto Groboto made meshes.

But, my main purchase...I finally broke down and bought "Filter Forge". Over the years, and through my re-inastalled computers I have used their demo many times, lol. It basically creates 2D textures (mainly) for use in 3D, since when you create a texture, it can create it at any size and automatically make it seamless for you along with creating accopanying maps for its; bump, normal, specular, metalic and alpha maps!

The other cool thing is the bump maps not only pop out looking like Bryce Terrain maps, they are made so I can use them as 16-bit grayscale!

I'll show ya what I mean...

I "rendered out" five different bump maps in Filter Forge and then mixed'em up in Photoshop to create this 16-bit Bryce Terrain. I'll take the accompanying Diffuse maps and do the same mixture so they will lay right on top of this Terrain for a cool little wall section.

I didn't create these original Filter Forge textures, they have over like 6,700 textures for download at their website (that work only with the FF program).

Pretty fun stuff though. My Bryce is getting its muscles re-stretched!

I have both programs.
Well, my Groboto is not the latest version.
But it sure is a lot of fun to use!
I must admit that I am too busy (and lazy) to use FF.
But I see you already have the hang of it.
Way cool!
Have fun. :-D

Unfortunately, Groboto 3 isn't out yet, I just pre-ordered it, `cause if you are doing an upgrade from 2.x, its only $25 right now. Can't beat that with a stick. So I didn't.

Yeah, MAKING an original texture in FF? Wow...that I'll really need to sit down with. It's just another Materials Lab to try and learn. It'll take some time.

LOL, you're not a beater, eh???

It'll take time, yes.

At leaast you are toying with it already. ;-)

Got the bump map worked out. Applied it to the Terrain with some reflectivity thrown in.

Terrain+Diffuse+Bump+Reflection = basically finished.

The cracks and "cube" stones need some individual flaking and chipping on the actual Terrain, but fun for just some layering work in Photoshop.

Very nice effects....    I take it that Filter forge is not an easy App to learn...

It's an easy app to USE...when you are using the thousands of pre-made textures, but creating a new, original texture from scratch...that will take some time to get that down.

I've downloaded that GroBoto demo and I'm having a blast with it...think I'll buy it and use it in conjunction with ZBrush amongst others. Thanks AS!
