My copy of XP is almost 6 years old. I had that problem too. EVERYTHING was crawling.

I did the normal things, defrag, crap cleaned ect..

What finally fixed it was I ran Glary Utilities and cleaned out the registry and defraged it. Almost tripled the speed :)

Now be warned- cleaning all the dead wood out of the registry can be a dangerious operation. Use with caution.
