Subject: OT sort of: computer slowing down

Anti-virus programs are useless once a computer has a virus installed.  Anti-virus programs are supposed to stop viruses from running.  Sure, they'll clean infected files.  But the damage is already done and the computer is compromised.

By the time you reverse engineer which virus you have and how to exactly remove just that one before it mutates into various forms, it would have been much quicker to just re-install the operating system (while behind a real firewall with no other computers powered up on the LAN... always).
