Subject: Terragen -> Vue ?

A-Spot ( ) posted Wed, 17 February 2010 at 7:08 PM · edited Thu, 27 February 2025 at 3:24 AM

Is it in any way possible to export a terrain from Terragen to Vue?

I use Terragen 2 and Vue 7.

Cheers,

Thomas

Can Terragen export 16-bit grayscale heightmap images or better?  Vue can apply such maps to its procedural terrain for best results.

I believe it can..I'd advise searching the planetside forum for tiff export I believe. Sorry I'm not more specific but my path is generally the reverse of yours...LOL...getting stuff into TG2.. ...

I normally use GeoControl2 as a conversion tool for that. GC2 imports TER files and exports TIFF files.

TerraConv can do that,

Thanks for the answers, folks. One problem to be solved now .... How do I export the .ter file?

vintorix ( ) posted Thu, 18 February 2010 at 9:48 AM

"Save"

A-Spot ( ) posted Thu, 18 February 2010 at 10:17 AM

It's not just Save. That only gives me the option of a .tgd file - NOT a .ter !

Any other suggestions?

bobbystahr ( ) posted Thu, 18 February 2010 at 11:12 AM

actually there is no way to export a .ter from TG2 I'm afraid...do check the planetside forum mate for a work around.. ....

So there is absolutely NO way of getting those nice, smooth Terragen terrains into Vue?

vintorix ( ) posted Thu, 18 February 2010 at 12:00 PM

Sorry I missed that you are using version 2. TG2 will support the .ter format in the future but for now you can use the lwo exporter via "Add Operator" button. Heightfield export LWO.

A-Spot ( ) posted Fri, 19 February 2010 at 5:23 AM

Hmm ... adding that LWO exporter just seems to create a bunch of LWO's that can be imported into Vue, but are invisible to the renderer... Solution?

Hmm, I don't understand that. The LWO object is just a mesh as any other mesh. Above is a terrain done in Terragen 2. The upper image is the TG2 terrain imported into Cinema 4D, the lower into Vue (the same terrain without any texture or bumb-maps).

Which version of Vue do you have?
Have you checked the transparency setting?

Correct setting when you import into VUE

Ahh ... It's working now. So how about the bump-map - can that be exported from TG2?

vintorix ( ) posted Fri, 19 February 2010 at 1:54 PM · edited Fri, 19 February 2010 at 1:54 PM

Its been a while since I used Terrragen 2 I hated those rendering times

But here is one post from the thread at,
http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=5852.0

I can't afford to spend more time with this now but I am sure everthing is possible in the export-import department.

*Right-click in the node network and from the menu select 'Create other' -> 'Lwo micro exporter'.
The new node (gray coloured) should have appeared somewhere near the mouse cursor.
Double-click it to change it's settings.
next to 'Filename' is a blank field and a 'save' icon. Click the icon. Browse to a folder you want to save the lwo file in, and name the file to your liking, but make sure you add .lwo at the end as that doesn't happen automatically.

Now go to the render tab of the main window. Select the renderer you want to use (eg. 'Full Render'), to change the settings.
In the lower left you have some tabs, go to the last tab called 'Sequence/Output'. If you purchased Deep+Animation you can render a sequence here, but you can also add a Micro exporter.
To do that, check the box of Micro exporter (and you can uncheck the box above that if it's checked).
Than click the '...' button on the other side of the blank field.
Go to 'Assign micro_handler' -> '"/Lwo micro exporter 01"' (the lwo exporter we just created).
Now that's done.

Last thing we need to do is place the camera in a spot that overviews the area you want to export.
The should be like the image you posted above, so that's good.
Now set the resolution to something square, like 512x512, and the render detail to 0.5.
(I once exported at full render size and detail, but the file was so large LightWave could not handle it...!)

If you have steep cliffs or overhangs, do multiple renders/exports of top and side views to capture all vertexes, as the micro exporter only creates vertexes that are visible in the render.
You can render again at higher settings with the Micro exporter box unchecked to create a top view image map if you want...
