You can do that way for sure, but using Photoshop 3D tools is like DeepPaint or Blacksmith3D-Paint. or BodyPaint from Maxon, only more familiar.
With the flattened UV map where you think something is may not translate well when you have the model in Poser and in 3D. I do 3D versions of the comic book costumes I drew in 2D and well....sometimes we do not get an exact match, especially when you cross seams or if the UV map is not exactly set up symmetrically. Also you can paint where you want to as opposed to trying to match a distance or spot that is not exactly on a vertex or on an edge.
