I have just within the last couple of days managed to open scenes created in Poser 8, using Poser 7.
I have switched off the use of external binary morphs in all my Poser versions ( 6, 7 8 and Pro ), so this might be a factor which enables me to save in version 8 and open in version 7.

I don't have the latest version of Poser, but I'll throw in a pet peeve anyway, what the hell...
The thing that drives me crazy about Poser (I have Poser 5) is how it just completely freaks out if it can't find a texture file. You'd think they could build in some better error-checking so that I didn't have to wait 5 minutes for my computer to stop spazzing out just because it can't locate some dumb texture file that I was probably going to replace with something else anyway.
Why, why, WHY?!
What really sucks is that there are a couple models in my library that I'd like to use, too, but because Poser flips out like this every time I try to load them, I don't have the patience to see if my computer can ever get it together and accept that the missing texture file is not there, that I don't care if it finds it or not, and I'd just like to see the damn model loaded into the scene.
If Poser 8 lacks this irritating problem, it may be worth the investment.

Set it to "None" and it won't look. Of course, it will tell you a texture (or geometry) is missing, but it will do it very fast.
If you're a merchant, it is a good idea to set it to "None," so you know when you messed up a path.
Out of interest, why do some users still keep previous versions installed after updating to the new?
I can see keeping 7 whilst still testing out 8, especially so if you don't like some of the changes in 8 as indicated by the original poster, but what would be the requirement to also keep additional previous versions installed? Is it just for compatibility testing by vendors?
Sometimes it is easier to externally link the runtimes from previous versions than to reinstall content. However, with the introduction of PoserPro and soon PoserPro 2010, you have built-in gamma correction rendering which must be added in the material room of previous versions. If you are upgrading, and have been Cg'ing all along, you would be less reluctant to delete or change settings in those nodes for every single material in your scene.

Testing is exactly the reason I keep older versions on my machine since I make a fair amount of Poser content. Well, it's the main reason. Once in a great, I would set up a scene that Poser 7 wouldn't render and P6 would or vice versa. I just got Poser 8 and am loathe to uninstall Poser 7 anyway, at least until I feel comfortable with Poser 8. Going from P6 to P7 was very easy since they were so similar. P8 isn't quite so easy since it's so different and will take some getting used to. Either way, in this day and age with monstrous hard drive space (I have monstrous hard drive space...lol), it's not really a big deal to me to leave the previous versions installed, just in case ;o).

You know what sucks about poser? That's its only a $ 300-$400 dollar program and behaves as such.

i create my scenes in P7, then use P8's render engine to render, and sometimes i forget myself and hit save on exit .... sigh ..... then i can't open that same scene up again in Poser 7 to add more or whatever .... has anyone run into this? is it resolvable?
(and I dont like P8's library system just yet .. getting used to it still) .....
