With a $1000 to spare, you could have had World Builder Pro with it's Max Plugin. It has animated streams, ocean waves, waterfalls, wind blown grass and trees... etc. etc. etc. It's interface was made to be pretty much like Max, and it has a somwhat steep learning curve, but for making *animated* environments (earth or alien) it's capable of doing things that are going to blow people away.
