The degree of spread is determined by how rough or smooth the surface is. Rough surfaces have weak and big specular reflections. Shiny smooth surfaces have strong and small specular reflections.
A perfect specular reflection (a mirror reflection) of a light source is actually very tiny on a sphere.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
