Poser 6 introduced the mc6 file that Poser recognized as a material and knew that it was not necessary to have a figure in the scene. pp2 files are poses and require a figure to be applied.
The ability to rename MAT pose files (pp2) to MC6 and have them work is an intentional "backward compatibility" that was built into P6 (and later)
I did not know you could apply them from the pose directory, but then i moved and renamed all of my MAT pose files to MC6s when P6 came out.
The only disadvantage i have run into is that DAZ Studio has never been able to see or use MC6 files.
