Subject: graphics card

lindans ( ) posted Wed, 03 March 2010 at 3:21 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 9:53 PM

I have a windows 7 64 bit OS with an NVIDIA Geforce 9600GT 1GB graphics card about  21/2 years old I am thinking of getting a new graphics card. Looking at the e-on website the following cards are recommended
NVIDIA Geforce 8/9 and GT200 chips so just wondering what would be the best to go for and will I notice any increase in performance.

Thanks in advance Linda

Are you noticing slow response from Vue with your current card? OOM or drop in resources? Beacuse if not, why change it? I have a 9800GT and Vue8 performs very well with it, so I'm not changing it, even if isn't the newest shiniest card around...Of course would be different if you're also a player.

The main reason I am thinking of changing it, is my daughter's PC need a new card so thought I would invest in a new one for myself put the old one in my daughter's pc. Like you I have had no probs with the 9600GT it has worked very well for Vue and other 3d apps.

Oh, OK, I see. Well, on my Win7 laptop, I have a GeForce 240M (M stands for mobile), and works great with Vue too. Not better though....

I also upgraded my rendering desktop to a GT 240 1gig DDR3 and love it. Even with the old 9600GT Vue would complain from time to time. What is cool about the GT240 is that its power consumption is very low compared to my 9600GT which needed to have the additional six pin molex power cable attached to it. The GT240 doesn't require this and can go into a PC with a power supply as little as 300 watts.

I believe when you get higher up in the GT200 series i.e GTX250 you'll need to have that extra power cable and larger power supply. But of course this is all moot because in a few more months the GT300 series will be hitting the market.

the "new" 300-series which is basically 200-series rebranded as 300 and only for OEM sale.

I have a GTX 280 and love it. It isn't the newest card since I had it in an older system and put it in this one a year ago. I have Win 7 64 bit and Vue 8 Infinite. It runs very well.

I really have AMD and NVidia for putting so many cards in the market with different numbres that don't mean anything most of the times, when 300 series are actually older 200 series revamped. I wish I could afford a Quadro FX and be done with it.

Yep
they should just name Video cards by the date.
You know like

oooh I just got the Geforce 3-4-2010 model.

Then they just have to agree to not come out with 2 cards on the same day.
because if they did that then they would have to have something like the Geforce 3-4-2010 3pm EST model.

Which they would probably do!

ATI Radeon HD 5970...the way to go !!!

Imaginatos ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2010 at 9:54 AM

Quote - ATI Radeon HD 5970...the way to go !!!

Don't invest in any ATI Radeon graphic cards if you want to use all newest improvements in VUE 8 / 8.5.

These newest versions of VUE is optimised for all new NVIDIA cards with CUDA technology.

Any ATI cards have not CUDA !

The best choice for VUE is:

cheapest card =  NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

medium priced = NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT

high priced =  NVIDIA GeForce 250 GTS

Any ATI Radeon is NOT PREFERED for newest Vue !

Good shoping !  :)

bruno021 ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2010 at 11:06 AM

Says who? And what do you know about Vue 8.5? AFAIK, it doesn't exist yet. Vue 8 doesn't make use of CUDA.

Vue 8 or 8.4 or 8.5 ...never mind for users.

CRASHES similarly too much times.  :)

Are you sure that ?

Why all users of new ATI Radeon cards still have message from VUE that graphic card is 'INCOMPATIBLE' ?

Is it  'incompatible' with DirectX or Shader ?

Which version of DirectX or Shader is 'incompatible' ?

Probably 'incompatible' with...CUDA. :)

bruno021 ( ) posted Thu, 25 March 2010 at 2:09 PM

Oh, now it's "probably", much better. ATI FirePro cards are fully supported, btw. And without CUDA. Now if you had said" probably" or "imho" in the first place I wouldn't have jumped like this in the conversation, but I don't like people making bold  statements about things they don't know, and misleading others in the process.

ATI Fire cards and NVIDIA Quadro used similar technology as CUDA from many, many years.  :)

CUDA borned from NVIDIA Quadro and ATI Fire (and many others PROFESSIONAL graphic cards !) - this not any newest technology in graphic cards.

opencl will kill kuda.

kuda is made just for nvidia and opencl is open for all.
You think nvidia can afford to skip opencl and when they don't it will kill cuda as software vendors will use the one which is not hardwarevendor specific.

Atleast I don't think kuda will survive in the long run.

3DdesktopsUK ( ) posted Tue, 20 April 2010 at 6:56 PM

hey guys,

I agree with Imaginatos, i have a ATI Radeon HD 5700 in my machine and Vue a crashes all the time and I have countless warnings in the terrain editor when launched, then vue just crashes :0( this is really disappointing as all was fine in Vue 7.

Do you think this will ever be resolved? The last update made things even worse for me (8.40-04 build 51934) and I can barely use it.

If not, then I'll have to bite the bullet and get a new card, would love to hear you recommendations for about £150...

My system spec:

AMD Phenom II X4 964 @ 3.40GHz Processor
Win 7 Home 64-bit OS
8.00 GB DDR3 RAM

Thanks in advance

I have 2 8800gts in SLI mode because I ocassionaly pay games (very occasionaly) and I must say the heat they put out is way too much. Invest in the best single card you can afford and enjoy the quiet ( i have a lot of fans) and never overheat because of a demanding render.
