I haven't updated my windows XP in ages now, automatic updates are off. I haven't had any security problems for ages either. Whenever I did have my machine up to date and automatic updates on, I only had security troubles, even to the point where I had to reformat due to a nasty virus. That happened to me twice and I figured to not update instead. Haven't had any problems after that.

As far as I'm concerned, these security updates are far from being secure at all. Seems like the people who attack windows, focus on the newest version, leaving the older ones alone.

Having said that, I make sure my firewall, anti-virus and anti-mallware apps are up to date. That is far more helpful then a lot of these updates that MS produces, which often leaves me wondering what they actually did update and why my machine is now suddenly trying to connect to the internet like crazy and why my machine is getting slower and slower update after update.

MS can update as much as they like, they can stop support if the please, I'm not to bothered about all of that.
