Shadow loss from nearby objects (such as nostrils) is usually due to having a ray bias that is too high.
The last image posted has black shadows because there is only one light, and there is no provision to simulate secondary (bounced) light. Miss Nancy suggested IDL and that is the way to go with Poser 8. But without anything nearby, there won't be much secondary light even then.
For an isolated figure surrounded by pure nothingness, you would want to use IBL to provide a secondary lighting model. IBL+IDL will be better than IBL+AO, but if you only use Poser 7, use IBL+AO.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
