Quote - Mmmmm, I'd prefer something like a basic shirt with no detail...now show us seams.  Show us collars.  Show us wrinkles.  Show us buttons.  Show us pockets.  If there are multiple methods by which to acheive any of these goals, show us.  Show us uvmapping.  Show us shortcuts noobs are not aware of.

What software do you use by the way?

Well to start with I use 3D Coat, I've been using it a while now and have worked out how to make clothes in it very thoroughly.  Feedback I have from people I have trained is very good so far.  Having someone show them how it works and what you can do with it demystifies the whole thing real quick.

I use it because it does almost everything I want in relation to Poser and Clothes, it's an organic modeller so removes the boxish look you can sometimes get with poly modellers.  Creating a poly mesh is very simple, and you have wonderful control over the flow of polygons, something I certainly didnt have with polymodelling apps.

UV Maps are a breeze, adding seams and unwrapping takes a few moments.  Adding material groups is similarly pretty easy.

Once you have got that far you can put it straight into paint mode, which is multilayered system which lets you paint directly on to the model.  You have the usual tools, brush, airbrush, splines etc and can paint photo textures straight onto the model.  Not forgetting the 3D painter lets you paint right across seams, which is great.  You can also create a specular map while you paint, as well as bump, displacement and normal maps.  Oh and not forgetting it has a link to most Layered 2D apps, so if an old favourite tool is missing you can link the apps and synchronise your work between the two.

As to the details you mentioned all of them are possible, and as you say in several different ways.  Collars would be tricky on meshes you dont own copyright on of course, but even then there are options, depending on how far from the original mesh the collar would take you.  All the other options could be achieved without changing the mesh at all, giving you all sorts of distribution options.
