You will need to create a UVMap of your prop's mesh, laid out in a logical manner in order prepare an appropriate texture. UVMapper is an excellent program for accomplishing this, and it comes in 2 flavors, free and Pro versions. I do not have enough experience creating such mapping, but I do use them extensively as templates in 2D programs for texturing.
