DAZ|Studio F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 11:14 pm)
My general feeling about this is simple. DAZ Studio is free, it can be downloaded for nothing, runs on Max OS and Windows, and it's used by a very large number of user, probably equivalent to the Poser installed base. There is no reason for not testing a product with it. None. So, when a product says "not tested on Studio" I assume that the creator could not be bothered with it and I don't buy it.I would leave a note but if the author cannot be bothered with spending some time for testing on Studio then why should I spend my time to let him/her know. My time is as valuable as theirs. Just stay away from those. Voting with your money has been a very effective way of shaking people from their bad habits.

i'd have to agree with you there Pret-a-3D although i have gotten a couple things that say not tested in daz studio they also didn't have poser procedural materials on them but they had textures for the texture and they work pretty well in daz. the two main things to look for with that is poser procedrual materials or poser dynamic both of those do not work in studio at all.
sometimes you have to play with the bump or displacement maps a hair but that's not too bad a thing to mess with but with both studio and poser alot of creators seem to think it's fine to change the folder layout from what they save the creation as on their maching after they save it and it passes so that really creates problems with "missing" parts of created content really bites crap to have to hunt for either textures or even the .obj because the creator changed the packaging after it passed testing or the testers changed it up
Yes, I know that several of those work fine, my issue here is with attitude. If the vendor didn't know about Daz Studio I would say noing about it. It is a bit clueless to not know about a major player in the industry but it would not be a big deal, I would work with the vendor to make him/her aware of the alternative product. It's when I see "not tested with Studio" message that I have a problem. That is simple laziness. If Studio was an expensive application I would understand. If it only ran on one OS, I would understand; but it's free and it runs both on Mac OS and Windows. I don't use Poser and still I test my products on it. I don't use Windows but I still test them on that platform. Because quality is very important to me and I don't release a product until it's tested to the best of my abilities. Developing software, and 3d products are software, is expensive and time consuming. Yes, that's the nature of the deal. It makes it harder to turn a profit when you spend that kind of time. That's ok, I'd rather sound a bit more and have a more complete product. Vendors like PropChick, who bundle the Studio shaders, together with the Poser ones, are the example to follow.

Hi Half Dragon,
Many thanks for the quick response there... So in general, you can pretty much use any character as long as you veer away form the procedurals, etc?
Sorry for a follow up noon question, how do you adjust the bump/displacement maps, is that done in the surfaces tab?
Thanks again,
Rob.
Some textures will use masks to apply things like makeup - rather than having a face map with no makeup, a face map with makeup 1, a facemap with makeup 2 and so on they will have one face map, a series of overlays with just the makeup and black-and-white images showing where the makeup should be applied. Those won't work in DS base, though they can be set up in the DS Advanced Shader Mixer 9and presets could be saved from there which would work in the free base version of DS). So that's one thing to watch for - it can be useful to look at the file list in the readme to see if there are image texture files named something-mask or the like.
For those of us who learned by trial and error to find what works and what doesn't..it might be ok...but for new ppl its very confusing...so I agree with pret-a-3d... its best to avoid those products until you have asked loits of questions and maybe get a little more used to what you are doing with the products you have.
As a side note...I do believe that the vendors who do not test in DS are being left behind and are out of touch.

Hello again,
Thanks for all the advice! :) Yeah, I get what you are saying about avoiding characters that have not been tested, it makes perfect. What I was really trying to see if anyone had got some characters from here and had no real problems whit them in Daz - Just some character recommendations really.
Cheers,
Rob.
If you see something you like...you can always ask and I'm sure someone here has it or knows someone who has and then they can tell you if that particular character, etc. worked for them.

Another thing you can do is..look at the comments left on the store page from ppl who have bought the item. Lots of times if it works in DS and says it hasn't been tested, someone will say in the comments whether it worked or not.

Actually Volg is tested and working in Daz
*tested & working in Daz Studio 3.
*Not working in poser 6.
I do talk to the vendor on and off, and she's quite nice. I imagine you may have to adjust some of the texture details like you normally have to with most poser products, but I believe the only thing you'd have trouble with is the included IBL lights, they would need to be converted. I have The Amazing Coat for M4, by that vendor and it works fine in Daz. If there is a problem she'd be more than happy to help.
The G2 figures (Poser) work fine. The Poser 8 people look contorted when you pose them in D|S.

That's because the Poser 8 people have the extra capsule falloff zones that DAZ Studio doesn't recognise. Starting with Poser 8 and Poser Pro 2010, Poser now has extra falloff zones for making smoother bends and twist in figures.

So, basically weight mapping for the rigging?
No, weight mapping allows an arbitrary value to be assigned to each vertex. This is still based on the position of each point relative to a volume defined by geometric primitives, but it adds more options to that system.
If it doesn't say it's dynamic clothing, or that it needs the Cloth Room, then the basic model should work in DS - unless it says it's been tested and failed (usually they just say not tested in DS or DS not supported). Where you are more likely to hit problems is in the surface settings - check the readme to see if there are textures included, if there are then you should generally be able to make the item work though you may (or may not) need to do a certain amount of work in the Surfaces palette. Check the reviews, and if in doubt ask here - if it isn't brand new someone has probably tried it in DS.

Hey guys,
Well, I've been taking my first steps in the 3d world. I'm currently working with Daz (as you can probably guess) and things are going nicely. I've bought quite a bit of stuff form Renderosity so far and have been very happy.
However, I've seen some really lovely characters that I'd like to get my mitts on, but as they say "not tested in Daz studio" so I'm reluctant to purchase them. Can anyone recomend some that would work? Im trying to do some dark and gritty guys, so if anyone has any recomenations plaese let me know. I was really interested in "Volg", but I was scared to make a purchase as it said "poser only".
I did purchase " Riku", "Chris", "Charles" "Koraki and Krissa" these have been great. :)
Thanks!
Robert.
