You can boot your desktop from a Linux disk and burn the files to DVD or copy to external disk. You can get Knoppix here-it works very well for my data recovery needs:

You download the cd image and burn it to a CD, and then use it to boot from. It gives you a graphical desktop and you can browse for the files you want to save. Just remember that you single-click instead of double-clicking.

[EDIT} Don't download the Adrianne version, as it is set up for blind people.
