I'm assuming the character is a group of props and not a figure.  Conforming clothing is meant for figures so if you want it to work as you've stated you're probably in for at least a little work.

One thing you can try is to turn the group of props into a single one.  Export them all together (but uncheck ground) as a wave front object then reimport them as a single prop.  Next load in the clothing and if it's conforming try to fake the pose as much as possible.  Next you want to scale the clothing up in size.  Now here comes the trick that is going to make this work.  On the animation controls click on frame 30.  Now at frame 30 descale the clothing back to its original size.

After that go into the cloth room and turn it into dynamic clothing by having it collide against the character (before fiddling with animation and after you've got it posed, export the clothing as an object, weld the seams, then reimport).  Run the simulation.  You'll probably have to tweak the cloth room settings but that might get you something similar to what you were looking for.  If it works for one article of clothing, move on to the next one.

If you are new at this, then it is going to take some time, but at least you've learned to use the cloth room.
