This is big news in the British media. Personally I don't like them and I'm not surprised that there are negative comments as Rosie says. Many Brits feel that the Olympics has been forced on us. The organisers keep making statements to the effect that 'EVERYONE' is behind them when in fact this is not the case. The event and the new facilities will only benefit a minority and after the games are over your average family will not be able to afford to use what's left.
Imagine a family in Scotland travelling by rail, staying in a hotel and paying to get into the village. The cost will be out of reach. This is rip-off Britain after all.
We only got the games thanks to a Spanish IOC member making a mistake with his vote. The Lottery Fund is paying huge amounts to this project and as a result of this many smaller projects in other parts of the UK are being denied lottery funding. In short, the public is paying for the games by buying lottery tickets and we have no say in the matter save by refusing to enter the lottery.
Even the Logo for the games cost a fortune and nobody liked it. After the games are over IIRC, some of the land is supposed to be made into residential areas, but only the rich will be able to afford to live there.
As for the mascots I think they're a joke.
