rstar, I'm addicted to news..(remnants of being a journo) ..love politics. And with all the newspaper reading, and art magazines etc that I read online.. you get all these oddball news. Sometimes, it's news like this that makes my day..rather than the bombings in Afghanistan or Pakistan's blocking of you tube and FB. (Rssfeeds makes news reading way so much easier)
Btw..I guess by now..the whole of UK is buzzing about the mascots. most of what I read have been negative..esp if you read reader's comments.
Sad. They are adorable. They do grow on you..
They are cute and what a beginning story... Too bad if other people don't like it... Their loss.

This is big news in the British media. Personally I don't like them and I'm not surprised that there are negative comments as Rosie says. Many Brits feel that the Olympics has been forced on us. The organisers keep making statements to the effect that 'EVERYONE' is behind them when in fact this is not the case. The event and the new facilities will only benefit a minority and after the games are over your average family will not be able to afford to use what's left.
Imagine a family in Scotland travelling by rail, staying in a hotel and paying to get into the village. The cost will be out of reach. This is rip-off Britain after all.
We only got the games thanks to a Spanish IOC member making a mistake with his vote. The Lottery Fund is paying huge amounts to this project and as a result of this many smaller projects in other parts of the UK are being denied lottery funding. In short, the public is paying for the games by buying lottery tickets and we have no say in the matter save by refusing to enter the lottery.
Even the Logo for the games cost a fortune and nobody liked it. After the games are over IIRC, some of the land is supposed to be made into residential areas, but only the rich will be able to afford to live there.
As for the mascots I think they're a joke.

I agree with Chris "Many Brits feel that the Olympics has been forced on us". We have a similar situation with the rugby world cup. The notion that rugby is our national sport is outmoded and has been for years yet the taxpayers of this country have already paid millions into the world cup and are expected to pick up a $55,000,000 loss as well and all this without consultation with the general public to find out whether we want the world cup here or not. While this is happening the Government is increasing GST,slashing health and educational services as well killing off small businesses who collectively employ more staff than the big companies of this country.
Cheers

WHO said Kiwi's can't Fly ?????
Chris, I understand your sentiments and I think that is the case in every Olympic in memory. Countries and cities promise the IOC huge payouts and extravagant facilities just for the prestige of being host. It is always at the residence's expense, unless you are a shop owner.
Charlotte, NC, the city near me draws it's share of conventions and sports events. Officials and the media always talk about the revenue the events bring into the area. Example is last weeks NRA convention bringing in millions with the 70,000+ attendees. Who got the millions of bucks? ... big hotel chains, owners of eateries and pubs not the general public who paid for the convention centers and such. We get traffic jams, closed streets, drunken, rude foreigners (foreign meaning not locals) and the bill for increased police patrols. Yay!
Oh by the way, I think the mascots are lame. Who picked those anyway?. What with all the UK's history, is there not a mascot identifiable with the locale?
I am sure the very young generation loves them, but I for one find them kind of insulting and completely off, not a good fit at all for Olympics...or anything really. Rediculous.

I had a look at the agency that designed the olympics logo etc.. I gotta say im not impressed with any of the works they posted on their website?? nor with the website itself for that matter...
I mean, their client list is impressive, but the work they deliver is not innovative at all?

** They are horrible. I say this not because the characters are horrible, but they are just a poor choice for mascots. Hardly anyone can relate to those characters. They would have been better off choosing Shrek and Donkey....at least most of the world can somewhat relate to those characters. Why didn't they choose something a bit more down to earth? It was a really poor choice IMO and I will dread watching the Olympics and having to watch those ridiculous characters dance across the screen.**

You can't be "British" because that's "racist" and mightupset someone...jeesh.
Other folks are happy to be Chilean, Kenyan, American or whatever, you know. Just the dweebs here get uptight about it all.
simple fact is, Britain is a nation of freakin' immigrants, all of us! Saxons, Danes, Romans, Scots (who're Irish fyi), Celts, etc though no one knows where the Picts came from, a blue box, probably....:p
-We've got dwarven skirt wearing octopus stranglers (Scots)
-coal chewing, kobolds who sing sheep down off the hills for...aerobic games with their funny shaped balls (Welsh)
-Halflings who think the local pub and cricket/football is as exciting as safety allows (English)
-Gnomes who's grasp of reality is like Einstein on LSD and who conned the English into drinking burned beer (Irish...we Scots are mad as hatters, but the Irish are in another Plane of reality entirely, never know whether to hug them or run screaming! lol)
So, from all that, and they pick THOSE bloody things for mascots? Jeesh...
one of them looks like it has a foreskin...
I pick the SCOTTISH mascot!!
THE MIGHTY, THE TERRIFYING, HAGGIS!!

I was just thinking recycle the Beijing mascots and put bowler hats on them. I agree these are awful just so many things coudl be done with it they chose to make something very weak. The wit of a misplaced ex-patriot.
