After using the five steps (described above)  to change Ben's size to 50% smaller and conform the clothes to the smaller figure, loading a preset library pose seems to work ok, no tear in the clothes (first screenshot). 

However when I directly move Ben with the editing tools (manually), I get tears in the clothing, as seen below in the second screenshot (red arrow).
