When I get a new item of clothing, I check the readme to see what morphs (if any) come with the clothing. I then decide which character (my group of morphed V4s saved as cr2s) I'm going to dress in this item. The clothing item is run through Morphing Clothes by D3D and character-morphs are inserted.
That morphed item is saved into the folder with the corresponding character.

Then, I look at (and invariably tweak) the materials. This includes GCing (and setting Diffuse() down to .85), unticking Reflection_Lite_Mult which is always ticked, and if there is any specularity, making sure CoE is part of the shader scheme.

So, buying a new item is a 3-5 hour time investment, minimum.
