Subject: looking for car paint materials

Dave-So ( ) posted Mon, 07 June 2010 at 8:15 AM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 6:04 AM

there was a huge set of materials for car paint somewhere I think here at Rendo. i think they were free. Seems like 2-3 years ago ..maybe p5 time or thereabouts...maybe 4.
It was a mix of mats for tires, car surfaces, chrome, etc etc ..very well done, but now after searching, I cannot seem to find them

any ideas ?

Do a search for "paint" under user Bagginsbill... won't go wrong, there.

Or have a look in Acadia's stickied threads of Bagginsbill's materials.

templargfx is updating his "158 car materials" for Poser.

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2800552

I think he was getting close to being satisfied, and then we had a good discussion that probably sent him back to the "lab" for a bit. Once he saw what GC and Fresnel reflection and a couple other thingies would do, he got deeply bitten by the realism bug. We might not see him come up for air for a while.

Meanwhile, are you just looking for a nice glossy paint?

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?message_id=3653699

Or do you want more of the metallic car paint look? I have it - I have not released it yet. It's one of the chapters in my book that I'm working on (sloowwwwwly).

Or do you want glass? Or rubber? Or leather? or ...

Great that the materials are being worked on.

I surely want some metallics .. and of course the glossies. I've been toying with the cars over at DSI ... and a few others, just as to do something, nothing way seriuous. my skill with the materials room is terrible. I read most of your stuff and my mind glossed over :)

Your book will be on my list for sure..thanks

OK, but it looks like you're making pretty much the same paint over and over, just with different colors. With matmatic you could make car paints, with various amounts of sparkle, shine, glow, etc in a thousand different colors in about 5 minutes.

The idea with my car material pack was always to make a simple and quick way to apply materials to vehicles without needing to tweak the materials manually. hence the large number of colors of each material type

I know - and my point was that matmatic can crank out 1000 variations of your paint. You just make a list of the parameter values (such as color) that you want it to generate.

You're doing stuff by hand that can be automated. The generation of thumbnails can be automated as well.

Grrrrr. Once in a while I go looking for more free vehicles to test shaders, and there's *always* something funky/wrong with them in Poser.

I really liked this truck, but it has reversed normals, and criss-crossing polygons, some reversed, in the glass. Normals forward doesn't fix it, and the transparency through multiple polygons is screwy.

Sigh.

Thanks, but nah - not worth the trouble.

There's other modeling stuff wrong. So many of these are meant to be arch-vis and not showing real materials. This, like many of the ones I downloaded, has the windshield extending over the roof line. I guess they don't care when they just put a flat gray shader on the glass and don't even bother with rendering what's behind it.

I once "fixed" a violin that was put together like that... a total mess of narrow tris, half of them back-faced. Turned out it would have been faster to model the thing from scratch.

So, I won't insist... been over this road before.

very cool.
my dad many years ago bought a garage that was a body shop. they had all kinds of paint books with those little square sample chips...tons of colors. I think that's where I got the inspiration for color. I used to look at them a lot. For some reason the colors just sunk into my brain.

Damn, dude, you do nice work. I especially like the off-whites - mica and everglades. I see quite a few new cars with colors like that - they're very fashionable at the moment and your results look like the real thing.

One nit ... The "silver" clearcoat seems a little too close to white, and doesn't have the metallic look I see on Mercedes all the time.

You need one like this:

One shader that I have always felt was missing from the pack is a dull metal shader, the sort of thing that you would find in the engine compartment, old exhausts, underside of the car, etc. I have always used textures for this, like this one, but it would be nice if there was a cool shader similar to this. I have procedurals for various gun metals, but they are not quite duill enough for the things I need.

Helgard - that should be easy enough to do in the Material Room.  Spots, Clouds and stuff for the colour variations.  Just faff around with the Specularity settings and that should do it.

Probably.  :)

LOL. Did you try and fail or just assume it is hard? Here is my paint shader with the following settings:

Diffuse Color: 111, 111, 111
Pearlescence: 1.5
Sparkle: 2

how did you get that highlight infront to look so good?

what is your secret?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Thu, 10 June 2010 at 2:34 PM

It's just a Specular node, using my standard cheat for conservation of energy, where I subtract its output from 1, and run that into Diffuse_Value. The softness is also due to the Roughness set to .7.

you see when you had a sun it looked good.because you used a specular node. now that your light source is an object it doesnt look the same. we  need better soft reflections.

can someone even explain to me why the soft reflections dont look good? arent they using rays? if the rays from teh shadows look good why not for the reflection?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Thu, 10 June 2010 at 3:31 PM · edited Thu, 10 June 2010 at 3:31 PM

Because shadow rays don't need more than about 50 to do a good job. Soft reflections would need around 1000 or more. Shadow rays have to sample only in a narrow cone. Soft reflections have to sample in a huge cone by comparison.

There are algorithms to do something like irradiance caching for this, and avoid having to do 1000 rays for every pixel. But Firefly doesn't have this.
