Don't change the names of the files. Just rename the material names in your material list. I think it's the second icon from the left in the object browser window? Make sure two or more objects are not sharing the same material name if it's obvious that they are completely different objects, etc. Otherwise, Vue slaps on the same material.
As for Poser textures, I keep one head and one body texture map and reuse them for the different body parts. But I choose separately which boy parts have bump maps assigned (if any). And I'll manually adjust the highlight colors and intensities for each part, depending on what lighting I'm using for a scene.
The eyes and eye brows/lashes are the trickiest, depending on how close the camera is.
