heyas; well... i cant recall exactly, but vue starts up and says (get out your bloodsong-computerese dictionary varian) 'hey, i see you have some crashed render kinda sticking out over here, you wantto save it as a real picture?' i say, 'yes!' and it asks me what i want to call it, and i just put in the name/filetype i had for it in the firstplace. it also asks me about the z-buffer, if i had told it to save that before, too. so i do that, close vue, then go to 'shop and open the tif's. the glow ones, in particular, were all done (except the glow.) trav, are you sure its asking you if you want to save the colour map, or the colour channel? the colour channel is your image. there's also the alpha channel and z-buffer channel. you should try saving it and opening it and see what it is.
