Oh another factor is whether or not you have a separate specular map in the texture set. If not, then the shader uses the red component of the color map. Why does this matter? Because darkening (tinting) the color map will darken the red component, thus decreasing the specular effect. You may have to boost the specular value to tune it, compensating for the darkening you're doing to get the darker color.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
