Wings is a good all round polygon subdivision modeler that has a good UI it is limited in some uses but I find it good for just about everything and there is a forum here if you have questions. bryce 5 can be downloaded for free and has an odd but easy to understand UI for rendering and there is a forum here if you have questions.
