If not in the current runtime, doesn't Poser go off on its own, searching through ALL the runtimes for it?  Or is mine fubar?

If they're the same prop calling the same geometry, Poser just loads the first geometry file it finds with the correct filename. Hopefully you don't have a different prop that calls for geometry with the same file name that isn't the same prop.
