This sounds like an issue I had on Poser 7/Poser Pro.

I finally ran it down to my CPU. Seems that my AMD Dual Core would freeze if both cores were being pushed. My work around was to render with one thread until I upgraded to a quad core 6400+. As a test, try setting threads = 1. If that solves the problem, I'll bet a buck that it's your CPU.
