Okay, there are two things going on that Poser makes sound like one thing: [Phong Shading](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phong_shading) [Reyes polygon smoothing](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reyes_rendering)

You do have polygon smoothing disabled for the prop.  Is this pic the thing you're talking about?
