Why waste time with doctors when there are complete strangers on the internet who you can ask for advice?
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
I found my throat pain went away once I quit swallowing broken glass.

BTW, there is no suitable "facepalm" pic for this thread.

Seriously.. all joking aside. Does it hurt if you open your mouth? I mean more than just a little*? Can you open your mouth fully at all?
I once had an abcess in my throat. never had ANYTHING in my whole life hurt that bad - but then I could hardly swallow at all, it wasn't just a question of it being sore. It was so painful that it was impossible!
So.. as everybody else has said: Go see a doc :) It may just be a virus, in which case.. there's nothing more to it than to drink something hot OR ear some ice cream - both helps, and wait for it to pass. If you have't got much of a fever, it's probably a virus rather than halitosis. Still painful but not exactly dangerous :) (a halitosis brought on by bacteriae CAN be dangerous)
Oh and Fully understand your desire to ask around here first. I don't like to feel I'm wasting my doc's time so I usually read a lot on the internet about my possible symptoms before i go bother my doc. Most of the time, I decide not to bother her at all, since it's most likely something that'll pass. BUT high fever is ALWAYS something that ought to make the alarm bells ring :)

Do you still have your Tonsils, that sort of pain is commonly associated with Tonsilitis, I had mine removed when I was 20 for that reason.
I met my first Wife in the hospital and that made the tonsils even more painful later in life, if you get me...ROFL..
Injustice will be avenged.
Cofiwch Dryweryn.
Drink lemon, butter, and garlic tea (no sugar) while doing a handstand and getting repeatedly punched in the gut. When that's done massage your throat with some warm limburger cheese.
If that doesn't work have someone slap you for 10 minutes.
If that doesn't work, cram your mouth full of throat lonzeges and try yoodling nude in a very public place.
Or you can be a wimp and see a doctor because none of those things will probably work. Frankly since you said you felt like you had a cold, it's probably just your throat draining... if your nose is running a lot this is what I think the problem would be.

I'm a nurse and my advice to you is to go and see a doctor. S/he will look at your throat and maybe take a throat swab in order to diagnose what the problem is.
Some things that come to mind:
1. Simple cold starting, no antibiotics needed.
Do you have a fever?
In the meantime you can do the following to help ease the discomfort:
Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve pain.
Gargle with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per 1 cup [8 ounces] of water).
Suck on throat lozenges or hard candy.
Suck on flavored Popsicles
Drink lots of liquids. They help keep your throat lubricated and prevent dehydration.

Oh sure, give him good medical advice instead of a mishmah of home remedies that will cause him more problems.

Yanno.. I just can't figure out if you're being sarcastic here. If you are, I fail to see why. Acadia TOLD the OP to go see a doc and offered something that would ease the discomfort until then. Is that bad?

Go to the doctor. My brother had a sore throat that lasted a while. He went to the doctor who told him it might be mono of cancer. It wasn't mono.
Granted that's probably an extreme case but better safe than sorry.

I am also a nurse and my advice is to see the doc. Without being able to see the problem it's real difficult to diagnose. Not being a jerk but can you tell me why my car sputters and coughs while running?
Same thing. You could have something lodged behind your tonsils, happened to a patient of mine after eating popcorn.
Being an E.R. nurse people always ask my advice and I always tell them they need to see a doc.
Who was tbop?
Quote - joster (tebop) said the doc gave him penicillin, hence it may have been strep throat.
I don't think they are the same person. They have different join dates and both were posting in 2009. However, both do use a small "i" instead of capital ones, so who knows for sure.
I am glad that he went to the doctor though. Non of us are doctors and it's impossible to diagnose something on an internet forum anyway.

I remember tebop too but I didn't know what it had to do with this thread.
A LOT of people, especially foreingers frequently forget to capitalize the i in "I"- that's hardly enough to identify anyone.
Joster, I hope the penicillin will help :) Get well soon!

Yes but in a way that made it appear that he was using this forum as a primary means of managing his entire life.

LOL I guess I'm a sorry loser as well then because I didn't find it odd in the slightest that anyone would ask such a question here. I might have done the same....

So,, just wanted to give you a brief update. 4th day. Still very bad pain on every swallow that i do.
The pain level hasn't diminished.
been doing the warm salt water gargles, and took 2 Penicillns's( started yesterday and it says 1 every 8 hours)...but that pain doesn't go away.
Do i just gotta be patient or is it not working at all?
If you've been to the doctor (assuming you have since you have penicillin), then yes be patient. It won't work overnight.

Guys, he's been to the doctor. How about you quit berating him ;) I doubt he was posting the update because he figures one of you have the cure for every illness ever. I'll bet he figures someone may have wondered how he was feeling, and it doesn't sound like he's had a sore throat in a loooong time. (think about it...if you'd never had a cold, wouldn't you be curious if other people went through the same thing?) I was actually reading the thread to see if he'd felt any better.
josterD, nothing goes away instantly, unfortunately. It may take up to a couple weeks. Just keep taking what your doctor gave you, and don't drink anything acidic or anything that would scratch your throat. Ice cream and freeze pops are GREAT for sore throats. ;)

Joster, I assume your doc took a test from your throat? Some doctors write out penicillin "just in case" and if it wasn't tested you may have got a kind of penicillin that isn't working against whatever has invaded your throat.
If there's no change and it's still as sore as ever, I'd visit the doc again, your doc may need to cultivate whatever bacteriea is in your throat to see which kind of penicillin is best. When I had the abcess in my throath (the culmination of a strep-induced tonsilitis) I went through 3 or 4 different kinds of penicillin before my doc "gave up" and admitted me to hospital.
So keep taking the pills you've got, but go see your doc again and ask if it is looking any better or not.
And eat cold things like ice cream :)

Antibiotics usually start to make you feel better after 48 hours but you may have side effects, since they usually attack gut bacteria, too.
Don't forget to complete the course, even if you feel better.

Ok guys 4th day, a few hours after i said it wasn't working.. Now i'm swallowing with slight pain instead of Strong pain.In fact Now i have almost no pain!!!
Wow, finally got some relief.
"Joster, I assume your doc took a test from your throat? Some doctors write out penicillin "just in case" and if it wasn't tested you may have got a kind of penicillin that isn't working against whatever has invaded your throat. "
Yes he tested me and it came back negative but he said he said it was suspricious cause i had the symptoms so he gave me the penicillin. and i am taking it.
Well anyways, now I'm swallowing and have been swallowing for about 3 hours with no pain. minor tiny pain ..Dont know if it will come back but i hope not
Glad you're feeling better. Just remember to finish taking all of the pills your doctor gave you. The reason we have so many antibiotic resistant bacteria is because people start taking antibiotics, start to feel better and then stop taking the antibiotics. What that does is gives the bacteria that are still left in your body a chance to develop a resistance to the antibiotic that you were taking. And it also gives the bacteria a chance to grow and multiply with that new resistance capability.
Bacteria are the oldest living creatures alive on our earth. They go back billions of years, and there is a reason for that. They are masters at adapting. Some can survive extremes in both cold or heat or go dormant only to waken and begin to proliferate again. Crafty little buggers!
So even though you are feeling better, finish the entire prescription to make sure that what was ailing you is actually gone, and not just down in numbers (temporarily) making you think you are better, when you really aren't completely yet.

I'm betting it's strep throat. 10 days of anti-biotics will fix it up. A burned or cut throat does not hurt as much and doesn't come with a fever. A doctor will know right away after looking at it.

This sickness is one of the worse i've ever had. One week already and now it's turning into other things.
It started as a Sore throat, that sorethroat finally felt better like 4 days after, after taking the antibiotics. But then i started getting more cough and mucous.
and a strong fever. I had a super strong headache today.. THen, the headache stopped and guess what happened? Now i have a super painful ear. and the sore throat came back but in a different form, now it doesn't hurt as bad when i swallow but it's just a constant sore throat that is much less painful but still annoying.
That ear pain, I wonder if this is a middle ear infection. well i just hope this sickness doesn't start going into 2 weeks or 3.
Just take the anti-biotics as instructed until the bottle is empty. It takes time for the cure to kick in and fix everything they're designed for. The bottles last for ten days mosty and that should be all you need. You don't want to be popping anti-biotics whenever you feel like taking them. You have to take them a certain way and then stop so, otherwise your body doesn't work with them anymore. Even if the pain goes away (and it will) just keep taking the anti-biotics until the bottle is empty so that the strep and ear thing is really gone.

Yesterday night I had one of the worse ear pains ever. It felt like a snake was forcefully making itself through my ear tube...that went on and off. then i managed to get a few hours of sleep(about 3)
When i woke up, i had blood dripping from my ear. Is that normal? I've never had such an ear infection before so it was scary
Go back to the doctor... better yet, to the emergency room......NOW! Blood dripping from your ear is most definitely not normal!

No need to close it :)
Did the doctor say anything else? What are they going to do about your ear drum?
Keep us up to date with how you are feeling :)

Ok you asked for it
Well he said to take some stronger antibiotics( and to stop taking the penicillin ones). And he also gave me ear drops. My throat had been feeling better on THurstday , in fact i felt like i had no more pain when swallowing.. but now i'm getting pain when swallowing again.. It's not as bad as before but it's there.
And i'm supposed to get checked again two weeks later to see if my ear healed.
So how's your day?
My hand kind of came off when I ran a chainsaw over it. It's hard typing with one hand and even with the towel the blood is all over the keyboard making it slippery and then sticky when the blood dries.
Instead of visiting a hospital I'm asking here if people have advice on what I should dddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd...sorry, I passed out a second and my hand stuck on the d key.
Advice on what I should do.
flibbits... too bad it wasn't your head that came off..
Oh wait from the sound of that inane post, it might have been...

So anyone know how to deal with the aweful pain i'm getting from the ruptured eardrum?
I'm mean i'm taking my meds and Advil too but they don't work so fast and I"m getting this aweful pain at random times or when i bring my head down.( as when bend over etc).
And then i already had an ear drum rupture in 2007 so i wonder if that's making it weaker and harder to heal?
The first rupture in 2007 was from flying but that time, i mostly just felt the pain at the ariplane. at the moment of the tear, then i just had to rest and i didn't get much pain. But this time, i keep getting intermitent pain that feels pretty weird.
and i still have the throat pain when swallowing.. It seem to come and go.
I dont want to miss more days off work, cause I'm just a temp. And they may get angry at me and fire me. But if i go and then i scream and cry that would be pretty embarrasing.
Go back to the doctor. Here is what you need to ask.
Tell them you have been taking Advil and it isn't helping the pain. Ask if they can prescribe you Tylenol #3.
Ask if taking an antihistamine such as Claritin will help.
Tell them that you still have a sore throat that doesn't seem to be getting any better despite taking the antibiotics. If they haven't taken a throat swab, ask if they can.
Ask them for a doctor's note about the time you have been missing from work because of this. Ask them if you need to be off work longer. And if so, if they could put that into the doctor's note.

it's so painful like never before . I never had it like this.
Sure , it may be cause i'm getting older and weaker but is it that or is it more than that?
This also coincided with getting scratched in the throat by eating a burrito( I always chew incmpletely and as food passes it hurts).
But i don't think what i'm feeling now is from the scra tched throat. Because when i started feeling this, i also felt like i had a cold. And i had a headache.
It's been 3 days with the throat pain when swallowing.
Should i go to the doctor or will this pass?
I've taken medicine for sore throat and it's not working.
