Subject: Boolean Operations?

GreenHawke ( ) posted Sun, 25 July 2010 at 10:18 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 9:21 AM

When making an object in Carrara (8), how are booleans done?  For example, were I to make a simple box and want it hollow with an entry "hole (door/window) how would that be done in Carrara?  In Bryce it's a simple matter, but I don't see anything that clues me in on how to do it in Carrara.

Sorry for the "noob" questions....  Sure is a learning curve to Carrara...

Thanks (again!)

It's fairly easy to do this:

Step one:  It can be done only in the vextex room

Make your main cube and make your doorway cube, move the doorway cube inside the main cube so that part of it is still sticking out.   Then hold down on the left mouse button and draw to enclose both the main  cube and the doorway cube.  Press down on both the ctrl and alt keyboard tabs at the same time and select a point on the main cube  AWAY from the merger.  That point  should change color.  Then go to your boolean drop down menu and select boolean substract operation.  The hole is formed inside the main cube.  Jan

Thanks so much!  I appreciate the quickness too!

Kevin, if you still have problems, I'll post pictures of the procedure--Jan

If you could post it anyways I'd appriciated...  got C7 want to learn how to model in Carrara..   There are not too many good tutorials on modeling....

Give me a few minutes to gen up something.  It will be done via Carrara 5 Pro.  However I believe that stuff that works won't be changed so Carrara anything should have the same procedure.  Jan

 Hi Tom,

Just a note, Carrara creates "real" booleans as compared to Bryce which makes "fake" booleans. By that I mean that Carrara will create new geometry that can be edited in the Vertex Modeling room. However, the boolean operation cannot be adjusted as in Bryce.

@MarkBremmer

Thank you I know Bryce is different...   I am learning Hexagon and that was my point of reference...
I will try these techniques..

How does one bring from the assembly room into the vertex modeling room two objects.... Only one object seem to go but not the other....   When I try starting from the modeling room, things are a bit strange...

If you want to bool two objects not originally created in the same instance of a vertex object, you'll need to use the Boolean operation found under the Edit pull-down menu in the Assembly Room. First select the two objects you want to execute the operation on and then select the Edit > Boolean option.

Mark, I didn't even notice that operation in the assembly room.  By gosh even Carrara 5 Pro has that puppy and it works without a hitch.  Thanks Jan

Ha! Even I learn things in this forum. In fact, solving problems that crop up for others always keeps me learning new things.

Thanks.. it seems easier then the other way....    I forget to click on "vertex object" before...   well am learning now...
