.rsr files were a derivative of the PICT format, which is very old hat and not used much these days. PNG files are platform independent and memory-efficient. There's a free rsr to png converter so it's a minor inconvenience.
"Change is inevitable, progress is optional". In this case the progress is hard to see, but abandoning a rickety old file format like .rsr had to happen at some time.
