Subject: Politics of the forum

Apple_UK ( ) posted Sun, 22 August 2010 at 3:36 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 5:50 AM

Once upon a time many people in this forum used to reply to technical questions that I asked, Now, the people most capable of replying do not reply. They have not replied since I questioned the use use of victoria and Albert (or whatever his name is) in poser, and since I said that pornographers have no human rights.

So, I am forced to ask is this forum merely a place for 'Right' thinking people to exchange technical information?

If it is then this forum has no place in art or poser because challenging contempory thought is the only place for art.

I do thank those few people who have replied to my recent technical questions

Josie

I don't know about any of that, but, if, indeed, people are not answering your questions due to political or idealistic differences, than that's between you and the other person(s).  Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

This it the reason we don't allow political or religious discussions.  We tried letting one go a few weeks ago, and it turned into name calling and a lot of hurt feelings because people can't help but mock before they think about the fact that they're talking the way they are to someone whom they've conversed with on several occasions with no problem.
I also know that assuming one's actions are based on religious or political reasons can be just as detrimental to communication as mocking that person's ideals.
This is just the way of people in groups.  You can't force people to adopt your viewpoint any more than you can force the tides to change or the wind to stop.

WEll, JenX, think micro not macro politics. You allow a prnographer to complain on this site that his work has been hijacked and I make my view known and am attacked for it. So, I am clear of my morality but I am not so clear of Renderosity's. Now, if those people of technical excellence refuse to help on technical issue where should I assume they stand?

JenX ( ) posted Sun, 22 August 2010 at 4:11 PM

My main point is, no one HAS to answer your questions, ever.  It doesn't have to be a personal reason, it could just be that they don't want to.  You may very well be reading more into it, or you could be completely right.  However, if you want to find the answer, I respectfully ask that you ask them personally.  Click the word "Homepage" under their avatar, click "Contact", and shoot them a sitemail.  I can guarantee that if someone felt personally insulted by a post of yours, they're not going to answer your questions in the forum, and they're DEFINITELY not going to answer a "calling out" as this post seems to be.

We're not here to judge anyone's morality or take a political stance.  We have staff members of all political, religious, artistic, and moral leanings, and don't require our members to conform to any one stripe.

You'll find a wide variety of people among artists.  There are ways to proclaim your opinion without offending the people around you, and, as I tell everyone else, if you don't like the subject of a thread, you don't have to read or post to it.  But, if you do, and people are offended, don't be surprised when and if they don't want to talk to you anymore.  Once you've cut off a person's nose, there's no use in giving them a rose to smell.

Josie you only have to look at the downloads of your free work to see how many people value your contributions to this forum.

Humans are complex beings, there can be multiple reasons why people do not reply to your or my questions.

What I do know is that your contribution to this forum is invaluable.

The work you are  involved in finally can only be judged by your own values. Technical problems can some times be complex at your level.

You have become your own Guru a lonely experience .

Bless you for your efforts, and thank you.

Apple_UK ( ) posted Sun, 22 August 2010 at 4:23 PM

Ok, Jen, you confirm my view. I agree that I must conform to the prevaling view. If I want to stay at Reno' then I must agree Victoria and Albert are ace and that pornography is good, or go elsewhwere

JenX ( ) posted Sun, 22 August 2010 at 4:35 PM

Not once did I say that.  You'll actually find NONE of those words in my post, nor a sentence like it.

What I have said is that you are free to post your opinion, and others are free to disagree to whatever degree they wish.  If that means that they disagree with your point of view so much that they don't want to answer any of your technical questions, that's their right.  Just like it's your right to state your POV within the bounds of the TOS.

To honest I think you're reading far too much into people's reactions, or lack of same.

As you're putting words in JenX's mouth only you can hear.

Perhaps the people who know whatever answer you're looking for just took a day off and the thread was buried? I know I saw a post yesterday of a kind where BB would usually have jumped in and answered, but I also know he's busy with the Lux exporter AND hhis normal job - so he isn't here as much as he usually is.

It's also the main summer holiday season a lot of places, so people may not be here but be on a beach somewhere instead.

To me, it looks like you want to feel hurt or slighted. Perhaps you are, I can't tell. I know I disagreed very strongly on "that thread" but while I still feel you're dead wrong here, and feel personally offended by some of the views displayed in the thread, I wouldn't stop me from answering you if you asked something where I knew the answer.

Partially because my memory is like a sieve. I'd forgotten all about THAT thread if you hadn't brought it up again...

I help with what I am capable of helping with. I'm not very technical and my "talent" is mostly in helping beginners with basic things, and searching out stuff.

You also have to remember that it's summer right now. So many people are not here as much as they are in the colder months.

Have you bothered to actually take the step I suggested and contacting those who's input you're looking for?
It's like guessing the color of a ball I have without seeing it, me telling you that it's not Blue, and then you insisting that it MUST be Orange, and ignoring all of the other possibilities.  You are free to think what you want, but, unless you're willing to GET the truth without insisting that your assumptions are correct, I can do nothing more than suggest you go about things a different way.

I am sorry but from my vantage point you are Hades bent on having a fight, argument, disagreement with anyone except the individual that has offended you. I am truly sorry that some one has attacked your personal position when asking for help on something that has nothing to do with your moral ideals. However, taking the advice given you to contact the individual directly instead of trying to pick arguments with people that have done nothing would be more prudent and less childish.

sometimes getting the tech questions answered is just a waiting game, especially if your question is a bit more advanced than what an average user would know. I usually post my question in a few different forums an plan on waiting a couple of days at least before getting an answer. I think people generally want to help out where they can and if they have information about the question they're very happy to share it:)
I have a help section in my Little Forum (at freeposes site in my sig) that you can always post any questions in, I certainly don't know everything but I'll share what i do know! :) hope that helps

Time of year often plays a part in not getting questions answered so quickly.  While I tend to let many of the Poser technical questions go if I don't have an answer, (and quite frankly there are those better versed than I to answer) I've been on overload with two kids in two different schools both a 45 minute drive away plus one parent laid up from surgery and a 93 year old grandmother with dementia.  I'm in the Poser forum every day but some things get by me.  It happens.  Bump a thread and remind people if it gets buried and you haven't received an answer.  It's not personal.

I get the feeling from this post that you're talking high from your tower, asking for things that none of us can take for granted.  How can you demand answers to your threads?  The few threads I've started are very short and some of them went unanswered for a long time.  Is it because my moral views clashes with someone else's?  No!  Most likely people didn't find them interesting or they couldn't be bothered to answer.  Not my problem.

So close your eyes, take a deep breath and relax a little.  This isn't such a big deal.  Get over yourself already.

I guess I'm with SamTherapy on this. Most of the time I'm just not interested in most threads, but I try and help where I can. If I can't help I pretty much stay out of it (I try anyway-I'm not perfect either and get myself into trouble easily).

Please don't take every little thing so personally....personal is one thing the internet is not ;o). IMVHO, it takes a thicker skin to take part in these forums. If you haven't got one you're better off not participating ;o).

Hi Apple_UK,

First I would like to say I do not know the specifics of the situation you are speaking of. I have been taking a hiatus from the forums as of late.

But I also have witnessed the type of behavior you speak of as well, many times. At times a forumite commits some gaffe in forum etiquette, which seems to offend somehow and will be ignored for a year or two. What the unspoken "rules" are, I could not even guess. There seem to be many.

The best advice I could give is to simply ignore the ignorers and go on with your own business, anything else just turns into lost time and effort wondering why. Dont get personally invested in friendships or popularity here, its not real. Think of people as fish in a tank on your desk top, what they say or do of no more import than that.

Most of all be true to your own self, regardless of whether or not you "fit in" with the clique of the moment.

I know it can be a hurtfull thing to be ignored or reviled.  I dont know you well, but from what I do know, its their loss. There are many nasty little undercurrents here, dont get caught up in them, it will ruin your enjoyment of your hobby. Back when I first started here at Rendo, Anton and a few others told me much the same thing. At the time I didn't know what they meant, but they were spot on.

IMHO of course.

cheers.

I find people that know things and then PM them.  I get PMed, too.  Not that much here at Rendo, but at other sites where tech is talked about as much as art.

Well, there are three or so folks here who irritate me on a regular basis and who I've gone back and forth with a few times - I'm sure some feel that way about me as well - that's life, especially on teh internets. I probably can't answer your tech questions but I've never not offered whatever knowledge I have to anyone because of that stuff.

I'd be surprised if anyone got really offended over the choice of models, that's such a petty issue, but everyone's different. Regarding the other issue, I'm sure you knew or should have known that was going to cause a strong reaction - either pro or con. You can view it as conforming to some standard, or you can view it as simply the discretion of avoiding potentially inflammatory remarks in a very mixed bag of people whose opinions may differ from your own. Having said that, I sincerely doubt that the overwhelming majority of people here would refuse help over such issues.  Absent more direct evidence of such a fact, I'd say that you may be inferring something that probably isn't the case.

There is no single political standard or view here. Everyone here has a common interest in 3D art, but beyond that, they can be liberal, conservative, pro or anti naked art etc. etc. ad infinitum  I was surprised to find that some of the most flat out right wing, probably have a bunker full of guns people at Renderotica :-) So, you never know what's behind door number three and sometimes it's better not to open it. If your conscience requires you to speak out then you should take comfort from having done the right thing and any consequences should be secondary IMO.

"Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality of those who seek to change a world which yields most painfully to change."

I ask questions also, although I should know most of the answers...LOL, it has been long enough since I have been working with 3D, but to answer your question, I ask questions also, and I most times get an answer for assitance, but sometimes it goes not noticed, but like revealed above, people are so busy these days.

I would not take it personally at all.  I was not even aware of your views and would not even take that into account, as I don't think anyone else really does.

My suggestion is just ask the question and see if it gets answered.  How many questions do you think you have asked that have not been answered?

I am sure you are just thinking no one is paying attention, but they are.  Sharen

Renderosity is a fairly broad church from what I've seen over the last 10 years or so. One thing it isn't, though, is a hotbed of pornography: it simply isn't tolerated here: quite rightly.

An image would have to consist of a depiction of explicit sexual activity, be of no artistic merit and be produced solely for the purpose of sexual excitation or gratification, to be properly classed as pornography. You never see anything like that here. There is another site with a similar name catering for those tastes... and I understand that even they have limits on what's acceptable.

There's tasteful nudity and some mildly erotic images in the Renderosity galleries. It would be completely wrong and deeply insulting to brand the people who make such images 'pornographers'.

If this is what has happened, you may find that some members will be so offended that they'll simply ignore anything you post. These may be the same people who can provide the help you seek. Their human rights include not having to reply to your questions.

I don't have time to read all this. I just saw "technical questions" "not answered" and "BB" in this thread.

If you're in any way referring to me:

1) I am getting no ebots at all for a week now. I don't know why. I have to manually re-read threads to see if something was added.

2) I am extremely busy.

3) I'm not aware you asked a technical question.

4) I had no idea you had opinions about pornographers or anything else.

5) I don't care much whether people have opinions about things that have no impact on me.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
