Just guessing - but maybe the mesh is splitted on the corner to get a sharp edge. This is often done with Poser objects.

Fireflys are normal with this type of render engine. Most often it's how light is traced, With very intensive light the render engine concentrate on certain parts sending not enough rays to this parts where your fireflys are. Another render strategy may help - try "path" insteed of "bidirectional" for example.
