Thats curious, my install of blender has an "AVI Codec" format in addition to the AVI Jpeg and AVI Raw formats. I guess you'll have to try the FFMpeg option, hopefully that'll work for you.

As a side note, I guess you've got not LW installed anymore, since it doesn't come in a Linux build?
