This is a perfect example where two minds, with the same goal, come up with the solution in completely different ways.
I replaced the internal OBJ with the one posted here. I also put in the prop. I will likely alter the prop and change it from the + to a series of concentric rings so I can add them with a simple prop when I need them.
I don't always center the camera and aim it at exactly what I want in focus so the "X" frequently doesn't intersect the figure or prop I want in focus. My solution is to use the old DOF calc script. Its a pita at times but it works for most applications. It too has its limitations as it calculates the closest piece of an object but frequently that isn't the focal point. Example? The Nose. From many angles the chin or forehead may be closer, not the nose (rough center of the face).
I do thank you both for brilliantly different methods and because you two came up with different solutions, I have a combination I can play with and expand with additional rings or other angles of lines.
