I see....well I have done a similar routine except the part about backing up my preferences, they don't seem to be affected by the crash...ie..I don't lose them. 

Now that you mentioned props, I don't use the geometric objects much but one time I did try adding a few to the scene, and I think having the added geometry in there brought the program to its knees a couple of times.
