Ray Bradbury wrote a story about about explorers coming to a planet, and discovering that someone, who was apparently Jesus. had previously visited and just left.  The leader sets off in persuit, but one of his crew realizes that the way to discover Him was to stay. 

I wish I could remember the title...  EDIT: Ah, I found it-it's "The Man", in his collection The Illustrated Man...
