Hello anybody. I've been doing art as a hobby for years and have been on this site for about 3 or 4 years and have finally gotten a commission. I'm unsure what to charge for services, so if anyone has some advice or knows of a trusted website with info, I'd be in your debt. Thanks, adorety   Art D

You're lucky you can name your price, normally it's a buyers market and they tell you how much you'll get...
You need to charge by how long it takes to do, how complex the work is and how much you think you're worth..

I've been doing some investigation and found that seems to be the general guide. I'm not a newbie artist, but I don't want to go too far. I'm thinking in the $15-$25 an hour range depending on complexity and possibly how long the computer will be tied up in rendering time. Thanks for your words and I'm still open for any other advice. I've been a professional illustrator for years. I base my pricing on Complexity of content (composition, modelling, rendering tests, etc...) and final use (personal, corporate, buisness, etc..). If it is a comission for someones personal collection I might also consider my relationship to them as a criteria as well. I usually charge $60.00 - $90.00 per hour for corporate clients.

I do pretty much as mdt does....with a few variations. If it's mural work, I charge 50 -70 bucks a square foot depending on complexity and size.  If it's digital portaits of children or pets, I might do 20 bucks a pop. (without framing or anything like that)  My standard hourly rate is 50 bucks an hour.

I based my digital work on the local printing and digital media businesses in the area. Scope them out and look at their prices. Some charge 25 or 30 bucks just to change file formats. Some charge the same for just putting it on a cd.  Many times if I list that kind of stuff for a client and tell them I'll throw all that kind of digital manipulation in for free, they get all smiley.

Thanks Monsoon. That is helpful. The project is going to be a video consisting of stills with music and narration. It's primarily about the story and music, but he wants about 50 stills and has a budget of $3000,  just found out,  so, I guess it's doing the math and what I'm able to produce. I'll probably be keeping things simple rather than complex. Thanks again.
