Anyone know of a good brass node setup that looks realistic? I am trying to get this trumpet looking good, but am having a helluva time getting it to look decent. Here's what it looks like so far.

one can do a simple brass shader, as shown in bill's threads (chrome with brass colour), but it needs a full scene with envdome/hdri/IDL to look good IMVHO. brass in an empty scene has nothing to reflect.

this is what I get (poser 8).  the shader violates fresnel's law, but with spec < 1 it looks even worse. maybe bill's heavy metal shader compensates for this anomaly. p.s. it's the free cornet exported from free version of c7pro.

Well ty for your ideas. I will try them out and see what becomes of it. I think my problem was the empty scene like was suggested. I was operating under the logic that ,"if I can get it to look good with nothing to reflect, it will look good when there is something to reflect." I guess I can include oth kinds of MATs tho, one that's totally raytracing and one that fakes it a little. One again, thanks for the ideas. I've spent more time trying to get the texture right then modeling it. It only took me 2 hours to model ffs lol

Well, it doesn't show much reflection after I added the atmosphere, but this is one I am working on for a promo image.

bion, keep in mind (if trying to sell an item for user in poser), many users dunno:

  • what render settings to use to get proper reflection
  • how to lite the scene
  • what material settings to use to get proper reflection

hence you gotta spell it out for them, step by step.

I know, and I am including several MATs for them to choose from. From one that looks good without raytracing to one that's all raytracing. And as far as lighting goes, I've been switching between different light sets, and, I'm not thinking this is an item that is affected too much like, say, a skin texture would. So hopefully, here in the near future, there will be a cheap, posable trumpet up for sale... As soon as I get promos done, package it up, etc.... Anyone thinking about selling, remember this... Modeling is the EASY part of selling... Trumpet took 2 hours to model to give you some sort of indication.

So true. I've got a product package I'm working on that took me about a week of intermittent work to model. It's been over a month, and I still haven't finished writing the darn MAT poses...
